Detroit EM: Taxpayers shouldn’t foot bill to defend ex-Police Chief Godbee

Seven months after an internal affairs officer filed a lawsuit claiming Police Chief Ralph Godbee lured her into a sexual relationship with the promise of a promotion, Detroit’s new emergency manager, Kevyn Orr, is intervening in the case.

Orr, an attorney and restructuring expert, rejected the city council’s decision to spend tax dollars to defend Godbee.

“He didn’t think it was a prudent use of resources to defend a man who was forced to resign from his position,” Orr spokesman Bill Nowling told us this morning. “An affair is not a part of a police chief’s normal duties.”

The city will still represent itself in the case, but not Godbee.

The suit was filed in October by Officer Angelica Robinson, whose allegations led to Godbee’s resignation after she posted a picture with a gun in her mouth on Twitter to get Godbee’s attention while she believed he was with another woman at a conference.

Godbee couldn’t be reached for comment.

Orr also is denying settlements in some cases, saying the city wastes money by declining to fight weak legal challenges.
