Detroit police officer attacked by pit bulls, rushed to hospital in squad car

A Detroit police officer was attacked by two pit bulls early Sunday evening while investigating a domestic disturbance on the west side.

The officer was taken to the hospital after one of the dogs bit him on the left arm and left leg at about 5 p.m., Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody told us. The injuries weren’t life-threatening, and the dog was taken to Animal Control.

The attack happened while the officer was approaching the suspect, who was on his porch with two pit bulls.

“As the officers were approaching, the dogs were getting more riled up,” Sgt. Woody said. “The dogs got away from the man. It didn’t look intentional.”

Police are investigating to determine whether the dog owner should be held responsible.

Sgt. Woody said the officer was taken to the hospital in a squad car and expressed relief that the injuries weren’t more serious.
