State lawmaker to join growing list of Detroit mayoral candidates

Now that the presidential election is over, the race for the next mayor of Detroit is about to heat up.

State Rep. Lisa Howze and Detroit Medical Center Chief Mike Duggan have already announced their interests in the post held by Mayor Dave Bing, who has yet to announce whether he’ll run for another term.

State Rep. Fred Durhal Jr. plans to announce he’s running for mayor, the Motor City Muckraker has learned.

Also rumored to be mulling a run are Council President Charles Pugh and former U.S. Rep. Hansen Clarke.

It’s no enviable job. The next mayor will be forced to cut already decimated services to offset years of deficit-riddled budgets. It has been no walk in the park for Bing, whose popularity has plummeted because of his handling of the financial crisis.
