Theodore Wafer was found guilty Thursday of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Renisha McBride.
“The defendant’s first thought was to bring a shotgun to the door, not call for help,” the judge said.
A reasonable person would have feared for his life and therefore been justified in pulling the trigger, attorney says.
Hoodies have served as symbols of racial profiling in the wake of the Trayvon Martin killing.
“I didn’t want her out there by herself,” a woman who witnessed the crash said.
A judge will determine whether enough evidence exists to continue the case.
Theodore Hall Wafer told police his 12-gauge shotgun accidentally discharged when he mistook McBride for an intruder.
It’s unclear if McBride’s blood-alcohol level of .218% will change anything about the case.
The 54-year-old shooter told police he “accidentally” shot McBride, who is 5 foot 4, in the face with a shotgun because he thought she was an intruder.
