Detroit homeowners fatally shoot 6 would-be intruders in 1 month

Detroit homeowners have had enough. Police are too slow, and criminals are relentless.

Since Feb. 22, homeowners have fatally shot six would-be intruders. The latest came at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday when a man shot and killed two men who were tying to break into his home on the 14800 block of Dexter, police said.

So far this year, Detroit has recorded at least 10 justifiable homicides, compared to 15 in all of 2013.

“Detroiters are fed up and they are taking action,” Police Chief James Craig told the Detroit News.

On Feb. 17, a  mother opened fire when three teens kicked in her side door, scaring the intruders away.

Other recent fatal shootings by homeowners:

• Feb. 22: A woman killed a man who tried to attack her in her garage on Abbington St. on the east side.
• Feb. 22: At 2 a.m., a homeowner shot two men who broke into her southwest Detroit house.
• March 6: A homeowner shot two intruders at the 8200 block of Penrod on the west side. One died; the other escaped.
• March 7: A woman in her 50s fatally shot a man trying to break into her home on the 22000 block of Grove Street.

According to the FBI, about 56,000 become victims of violent or property crimes. That’s about 8% of the population – one of the highest rates in the country.

In Wayne County, there are about 80,000 concealed weapons permits.

“They aren’t going to take it anymore,” Detroit Police Deputy Chief Rodney Johnson said of residents.
