Duggan lies about secret mayoral bid

Let’s hope Mike Duggan is more truthful than he has been about his secret bid to become Detroit’s next mayor.

In interview after interview, the Detroit Medical Center CEO and former Wayne County prosecutor has denied plans to run since moving from the suburbs to Palmer Woods in Detroit earlier this year.

“There is nothing here to talk about,” Duggan brazenly told Free Press reporter Jim Schaefer in late February. “Living in Detroit is a personal life choice and not a declaration of candidacy for anything. Sure hope you’ve got more interesting things to cover.”

Turns out, Duggan is running and has been quietly doing so for months. He has been secretely recruiting a team of advisers and meeting with business owners, pastors and other community leaders in preparation for his candidacy, the Detroit News reports.

Duggan, 53, even met privately with Mayor Dave Bing and Council President Charles Pugh, who welcomed the candidacy.

In short, Duggan lied to Detroiters – the people he wants to represent. In a city that continues to churn out lying and deceitful politicians, Duggan is an outsider doing nothing to regain trust in Detroit’s leaders.

This is no way for a suburbanite-turned-Detroiter to convince a predominately black city to make him the first white mayor since 1973.
