Thigh-high grass has swallowed swaths of Detroit that now look more like prairies than neighborhoods. Dozens of parks that Mayor Bing pledged to maintain are a sea of green. Some bus stops are buried in weeds.

It attracts mosquitos, rats, mice and trash.

Detroit, which has been taken over by an emergency manager and may soon end up in bankruptcy court, no longer has the money to provide even the most basic services. The situation has gotten more dire.

We drove the streets of Detroit to capture the accumulation of grass.
