Aerial photos: Historic Tiger Stadium site dug up for artificial turf

First, the city of Detroit demolished historic Tiger Stadium.

Eight years later, the city sold the site for $1 to a group that dug up the field this month to install artificial turf over the protests of Corktown residents and baseball purists.  

The Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL), which bought the site, said artificial turf is necessary because grass won’t withstand year-round youth sports.

But it turns out, PAL won’t be using the field as much as it said, raising questions about the need for artificial turf.

After the stadium was demolished, the volunteer Navin Field Grounds Crew maintained the park so residents could play baseball on the historic field. The crew even volunteered to mow the grass for PAL, but the police group would not budge.
