Theodore Wafer is charged with second degree murder after fatally shooting 19-year-old Renisha McBride in the early morning hours of Nov. 2.
McBride had been in a car crash after an evening of drinking and several hours later knocked on Wafer’s door in Dearborn Heights.

Wafer, 55, who claims self-defense, gave this account as he testified in his trial Monday:
On Nov. 1, Wafer said, he drank three beers at a neighborhood bar before going home and falling asleep on the recliner in his living room around 10 p.m. Loud knocking woke him up.
“The floor was vibrating from the banging,” Wafer said.

Unable to find his cell phone, Wafer said he grabbed his shotgun and feared he was under attack.
“I wasn’t going to cower in my house,” he testified, explaining why he decided to go toward the front door. “I didn’t want to become a victim.

“It was them or me.”
Wafer testified that his peep hole didn’t work. Clutching the shotgun with his left hand, Wafer said he opened the door and was startled when he saw someone emerge. He raised the gun and pulled the trigger.
Wafer testified that he dropped the gun and found his phone in his pocket. He called 911.

Wafer expressed remorse.
“She had her whole life in front of her,” he said. “I took that.”
