There’s no telling what would have happened if an off-duty police officer wasn’t attending church on Detroit’s west side Sunday morning.
As a man wielding a hatchet approached Citadel of Praise on Lyndon, the officer confronted the 27-year-old in front of the church.
“He confronted the guy and tried to calm him down,” Detroit Police Capt. Steve Walton said.

During the confrontation on the porch of the church, the officer was struck by the hatchet in the knee before opening fire on the man, who was described as mentally ill. A responding officer also shot the attacker, who has not yet been identified.

The officer was not cut in the attack and only sustained minor injuries.
The man with the hatchet was in critical condition Sunday night.

It’s unclear what provoked the attack. Police are investigating.
