Injured Detroit firefighter refuses medical treatment, says he can’t afford it

A Detroit firefighter who was rescued from a house fire early this morning refused medical treatment because he said he can’t afford the bills.

Firefighter Scott Kasinec said recent cuts to benefits and pay have made it difficult enough to get by.

“I have to feed my wife and kids,” Kasinec said after the fire. “We’re taking major pay cuts, and I can’t afford it.”

The 20-year veteran of the fire department fell through a floor and into the basement, forcing firefighters to rescue him with a ladder.

Kasinec said he already has an $800 bill from a previous fire injury, and the city won’t pay it.

“The union said it falls on deaf ears,” he said of the medical bills.

Kasinec and his colleagues recently absorbed a 10% pay cut and reductions in health care and retirement benefits.

The Detroit Fire Department is one of the busiest in the nation with more than 20 fires a day, most of them suspicious.
