Brian Baulch never saw the wall collapse. Cascading bricks knocked the 31-year-old unconscious and buried him in a heap of debris.
About two months after the August 2010 collapse injured six Detroit firefighters, I was sitting with Baulch at his friend’s house as they watched baseball highlights on TV and talked about family. Baulch still winced in pain. He busted his nose and both feet, and fractured six ribs, six vertebrae and his pelvis.
“You never know when it’s going to be your last day,” Baulch told me for a story I wrote for the Detroit Free Press.
Then came news today that the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals vacated the 15-year sentence for the arsonist who set the blaze, Samson Wright, 32, because of a prosecutorial error. It means Wright likely will receive a reduced sentence for a crime that paralyzed Brendan Milewski and forced the retirement of two other firefighters.
In an underfunded fire department where even basic supplies are hard to come by, firefighters have come to expect just about anything.
“You’re not going to get away from arsons,” Baulch’s boss, Lt. Gerald Rutkowski, told me at the time.
He spent nearly a month in the hospital with broken feet and other injuries.
“It’s part of being a firefighter in Detroit,” Rutkowski said.
