As Detroit tumbles closer to bankruptcy, Mayor Dave Bing is imploring council members to return from recess today for an emergency meeting to reconsider a contract that would open up million in state funding to feed the cash-starved budget.

In a show of defiance last week, the council indefinitely shelved a vote on the matter, forcing the mayor to announce mandatory furlough days for thousands of city workers in a last-ditch effort to remain solvent. Other painful cuts are coming, he warned.
Bing is expected to call a 1 p.m. meeting in council chambers in what almost certainly will be a bitter, combative session. Crowds have grown more hostile, and the mayor and council’s relationship is dysfunctional.
What’s troublesome, however, is that city officials didn’t post a meeting notice for the session, which means many residents won’t have ample time to attend the meeting and make a statement.
“Surprise, surprise,” Shirley Robinson, 49, said. “Suddenly council wants to change their vote and there’s no meeting notice posted? This just sounds wrong.”
