Photo gallery: More than 100 bassists gather in front of Motown Historical Museum

Chad Brown is a bit off.

He sports a flattop, prefers video games over showers and is crazily versed in Russian literature.

“I’m always the odd person in the room,” Brown, 34, said. “But today, I can get my funk on. We bassists are weird birds.”

Brown joined about 100 other bass players Saturday on the front lawn of the Motown Historical Museum for the second annual gathering of Detroit Bass Players, a group of local musicians who share a passion for the bass guitar.

After a group photo in front of the Hitsville USA building, bassists as young as 8 and older than 70 talked about funk, blues and jazz and admired the variety of bass guitars..
