9. The Masonic Temple

This Temple street arena is the world’s biggest Masonic Temple and also the largest venue on this list. George D. Mason was the original designer of the neo-gothic building that was constructed mostly with Indiana Limestone in 1922 and meant for use by the Masonic Temple Association. With several ballrooms and a Scottish Cathedral inside, it changed to a theatre and music venue and quickly turned into the premier place to see live music in the Cass Corridor.

Among the list of famous musicians who have visited the temple are Jimi Hendrix, the Beach Boys, Crosby Still Nash and Young, Queen, Van Morrison, Bob Marley, the Talking Heads and Bruce Springsteen. It is also used as the home for the Detroit Derby girls, a women’s roller derby team. The Masonic Temple is officially part of the Cass Corridor Historic District and the National Register of Historic Places.
