Dozens of employment publication boxes illegally dumped near Detroit River

Dozens of faded red boxes that supplied tens of thousands of metro Detroiters with weekly employment publications have been illegally dumped on abandoned property near the west end of Detroit’s RiverWalk.

Motor City Muckraker photographer Michael Brouwer spotted the piles of Today’s Careers boxes near the Detroit River at W. Jefferson and Rosa Parks this weekend.

On Monday, Mayor Mike Duggan’s administration, which has been cracking down on blight and illegal dumping, pledged to remove the boxes and track down the owners soon after we sent photos to the city.

“We will have these dumped boxes removed as they do constitute a blighted condition,” said Ron Brundidge, director of the Department of Public Works. “Our Environmental Enforcement Unit will also follow up with the owners of the boxes, as they have responsibility even if they don’t own the property where they are now.”

Today’s Careers is no longer in print and have been replaced at least five years ago with the Employment Guide, which prints job and education opportunities in cities across the country.

Employment Guide LLC, which owns the publication now, said it was never affiliated with Today’s Careers and has no idea who would have dumped the boxes.

Today’s Careers last had an address at 770 Welch St. in Commerce Township, but past phone numbers and its previous website – www.todayscareersworks.com – no longer work.
