Wafer, who broke down while testifying this week, shot and killed McBride with a shotgun after he said she repeatedly and violently knocked on his door in the early morning hours of Nov. 2.

Wafer claimed self-defense, saying he believed people were breaking into his home. He said he couldn’t find his phone to call 911, so he opened his front door with a shotgun and pulled the trigger, killing McBride, who had been in a car accident hours earlier.

Prosecutors argued Wafer was trigger-happy and killed someone who posed no threat to him.

“We are obviously very pleased with the jury verdict and feel that justice was served today,” Prosecutor Kym Worthy said. “We sincerely hope that this brings some comfort to the family of Renisha McBride.”
