Detroit plans to commemorate Nelson Mandela’s birthday today by renaming a street along the riverfront in his honor and celebrating his 1990 visit to the city.
City officials will unveil “Nelson Mandela Drive” at what is now Atwater Street at noon Friday.
On Dec. 5, Mandela died at the age of 95.

The tribute begins at 11:45 a.m. at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, where officials will recall Mandela’s inspiring trip to Detroit in June 1990. A procession to the new street will follow with drums and music at noon.
Mandela delivered a speech at Tiger Stadium, met with then-Mayor Coleman Young and spoke to workers at the Ford River Rouge auto plant in Dearborn.

The city of Detroit has other streets named after civil rights icons, including the boulevards of Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. Both streets are lined with sporadic abandonment, homelessness and blight.
