Police: Detroit councilman found slumped over drunk in driver’s seat

That didn’t take long.

Yet another Detroit City Council member is accused of breaking the law. This time, Councilman Scott Benson was arrested on suspicion of driving drunk in Southfield on Sunday after police said they found him slumped over the wheel at a stop light on the Southfield Service Drive near 8 Mile.

Benson was jailed overnight and missed today’s Public Health and Safety Standing Committee meeting, which he chairs. City officials are trying to determine whether he was driving a city-owned car.

“We have recently learned that misdemeanor charges are being sought against Councilman Scott Benson,” Mayor Mike Duggan and Council President Brenda Jones said in a joint statement this morning. “We have no first-hand facts about the matter and we will not speculate. Instead we will let the judicial system proceed in its normal course.

In the meantime, we will remain focused on getting the city’s business done.”

Earlier this year, Councilman George Cushingberry was pulled over by police and accused of fleeing and eluding and possessing marijuana and an open container. Last year, former Council President Charles Pugh resigned after he was accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a high school student.

Benson, who is serving his first term, couldn’t be reached for comment.
