Good Samaritan: Detroiter holds arsonist at gunpoint until police arrive

Detroiters are fed up with crime and taking back the streets.

While inside a west-side gas station at 10:45 p.m. Monday, a 47-year-old man with a concealed weapons permit spotted someone setting fire to a dumpster.

The man “observed the suspect toss something in the dumpster and seconds later flames were coming out,” Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody said.

The witness ran outside and held the 58-year-old suspect at gunpoint until police arrived about 10 minutes later.

The detainment follows a spate of high-profile shootings in which homeowners killed would-be intruders. In just a one-month period from late February to late March, Detroit homeowners shot and killed at least six burglars.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said in January that “good community members who have concealed weapons permits” deter crimes.

Detroit has seen an uptick in permits to carry concealed weapons. In Wayne County, there are more than 80,000 concealed weapons permits.
