The forlorn, blighted corner of Cass and Martin Luther King Jr. is about to get a historic makeover that will revive two long-abandoned apartment buildings.
A groundbreaking ceremony will be held early this afternoon as crews begin rehab work on the three-story, 109-year-old Davenport and the six-story Cass Plaza that was built in 1924. Both are planned as affordable apartments.
Originally the Naomi Apartments, the Cass Plaza at 3550 Cass was built in the Italian Renaissance style and housed 78 units. The plan is to convert the building into 39 apartments and a coffee shop by 2015.

The Beaux Arts-style Davenport is expected to be finished this fall with eight restored units. The spacious building at 149 Davenport was once home to Detroit’s upper-middle class until giving way to artists in the 1960s.
The combined cost is expected to be $9.5 million, which will be funded partly by the Great Lakes Capital Fund, grants and historic tax credits.
Both are part of the larger Cass-Davenport Historic District, an area bounded by MLK, Cass and Davenport. Also included in the district are the occupied Aderna Court Apartments and the Chesterfield Apartments.

The projects are organized by the Cass Corridor Neighborhood Development Corporation.
