The enormous metal arm tore through a layer of red bricks Wednesday afternoon, exposing a kitchen and bedroom still partially furnished. The remnants spilled out, marking the beginning of demolition of the storied Brewster-Douglass housing projects near Brush Park.
Mayor Dave Bing said the $6.5 million project aims to first level the ramshackle row houses, followed by the graffiti-strewn high-rises along I-75. Demo is expected to be complete in spring 2014.
The project is the centerpiece of Bing’s plan to demolish 10,000 abandoned buildings in four years.
