Disruptive cell phones have irritated Judge Raymond Voet so much that he posted a zero-tolerance policy at Ionia County 64A District Court warning that he would hold in contempt anyone whose electronic device sounded in the courtroom.
On Friday, Voet’s new smartphone began emitting sounds from the voice command feature in the middle of closing arguments during a jury trial.
Bad timing for a judge who has held police officers, witnesses, lawyers, spectators and others in contempt.
During a break in the trial, Voet held himself in contempt and paid a $25 fine.
“I set the bar high, because cellphones are a distraction and there is very serious business going on,” Voet told the Associate Press. “The courtroom is a special place in the community, and it needs more respect than that.
