In odd twist, Republicans shame Democrats for ignoring Detroit; new Red Wings arena at stake

Democrats in the state House are threatening to derail legislation that would help the Illich family build a new arena for the Detroit Red Wings in Detroit, legislators told Motor City Muckraker this afternoon.

Protesting the Republicans’ unscrupulous handling of the controversial right-to-work legislation, Democrats are pledging to oppose a measure that would release million in taxes from the Downtown Development Authority.

The funds are part of a proposed $650-million entertainment district that would include housing, retail and office space in a downtown clawing for a comeback.

House Speaker Pro Tem John Walsh said he’s trying to corral enough votes from Republicans, who hold a slight majority but are hesitant to fund a hockey arena with tax dollars.

Without support from the Democrats, the bill likely would fail, lawmakers conceded.
