One of the few corners of Detroit government that has not been tainted by corruption in the past few years was the target of an FBI raid this morning.
The dramatic scene unfolded at the main branch of the cash-troubled Detroit Public Library system in Midtown as nine agents with search warrants seized financial records and computer equipment from administrative offices.
The investigation is focused on contracts with outside companies, among other financial transactions, sources told the Motor City Muckraker.
The news comes at a vulnerable time for the library system, where money problems recently have forced the closure of two branches and the layoffs of nearly a quarter of the 365-member staff. Other branches are at risk of closing.
In just the past few years, the FBI has built corruption cases against Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, the Police Department, Health and Wellness Promotion, Human Services and the school district.
