A Wayne State University police officer was in critical condition this evening after he was shot in the head about a mile west of campus.
At 6:40 p.m., the 29-year-old officer, Collin Rose, stopped a man on a bike at Brainard and Lincoln near W. Grand River and Martin Luther King. For unknown reasons, the man shot the officer in the head.
After a massive manhunt, police found the suspect, Deangelo Davis, near Michigan and Trumbull shortly before 10 p.m. He had outstanding misdemeanor warrants
The officer was in surgery this evening.
“We pray for the recovery of this Wayne State police officer,” Detroit Police Chief James Craig said at the scene. “An attack on a police officer is an attack on all of us.”
It was the first time a Wayne State police officer had been shot.
Police from several agencies were searching the area for the suspect, and a helicopter was flying above.
Wayne State police patrol a large area off campus and are credited with making Midtown and the Cass Corridor safer.
