Protesters and a journalist were assaulted Saturday by church members and security at Great Faith Ministries, where Donald Trump had spoken earlier this month, when a demonstrator shouted, “All power to the people.”
The action was captured on video by citizen journalist Marc D’Ande, who switched on his camera when he said a female church member began striking a protester with her shoe. D’Andre, who was featured on Motor City Muckraker for his dogged coverage of protests and crime in Detroit, said church leaders “grabbed me by the neck, put me in a headlock and drug me up the aisle way while they had me restrained from both sides,” even though he was not a part of the protest.
Church leaders in swag suits pushed, dragged and swung at protesters from New Era Detroit, a group dedicated to calling attention to inequality and police abuse. Witnesses said protesters were non-violent and only wanted to speak out about Bishop Wayne T. Jackson’s decision to film an interview with presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has a history of inciting violence against people of color.
But church members wanted none of it and became combative as they forced the protesters out.
Jackson, who was asking for donations Saturday of $300 and $1,000, has been accused of exploiting his position as a black church leader to enrich himself and his Impact Network, a Christian cable TV channel, by inviting Trump.
Police arrived as protesters were being forced out.
Motor City Muckraker couldn’t reach church leaders for comment.
