Firefighters are bracing for what has become the most destructive three-day period for fires in Detroit.
Beginning Saturday at 8 p.m. through the Fourth of July, we will provide details of every fire to show where they are breaking out and how well-equipped the Fire Department is to handle the anticipated onslaught of arsons.
For the past several years, the three-day period ending on July 4 has recorded more fires than the Devils’ Night period from Oct. 29 to Oct. 31. The Fire Department was so busy that it ran out of aerial ladder trucks to respond to some fires.
We’ll provide photos, videos and a map of the fires, as well as a comparison to past years. We’ll update fires as they happen.
Fires since 8 p.m. Saturday:
- Houses: 45
- Garages: 8
- Apartments: 4
- Commercial buildings: 4
- Hospitals: 1
- Brush, grass, trash: 58
- Cars: 10
- Dumpsters: 9
- Playscape: 1
Total: 140
