Just three months after he was appointed Wayne County treasurer, Richard Hathaway is resigning.
The former Wayne County chief assistant prosecutor said his final day is April 8.
“Due to personal family matters, I am compelled to step down,” Hathaway wrote in a resignation letter. “This has been a very difficult decision, but I know in my heart that it is the right decision.”
Hathaway, 66, was appointed in December to replace Treasurer Raymond J. Wojtowicz, who retired after holding the position for 39 years.
It’s unclear what the “personal family matters” are.
Chief Deputy Treasurer Eric Sabree will take over until a replacement is appointed.
I was confident that Richard would lead the Treasurer’s Office through at least the next few election cycles. Being the treasurer is a full time commitment,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said. “He was genuinely concerned that the recent confluence of family events would not allow him to serve with the excellence and time commitment necessary.

This illustrates what I have always respected about Richard and his core values: God, family, and great work ethic. If there were more people like him that deeply cared about their commitments, we would be in much better shape as a society. I hope that he will return to my office one day – albeit in a part time capacity.”
Wayne County Executive Warren Evans said in a written statement, “Treasurer Hathaway has dedicated his career to public service. Our administration was eager to work with him on new measures to keep Wayne County families in their homes; however we realize this must have been a difficult decision for Treasurer Hathaway and we wish him and his family the best.”
