10 Photos: Breathtaking view from 38-story Book Tower

When the 38-story Book Tower opened in 1926, it was the tallest building in Detroit and a testament to the city’s rapid economic growth.

But after decades of decline, the copper-crowned, ornamental skyscraper became vacant in 2009 and was on the city’s dangerous buildings list.

Then billionaire Dan Gilbert announced this summer that he bought the Louis Kamper-designed building and plans to restore it.
