Detroit discards medical waste, used needles outside of Eastern Market building

A dead rat, used needles, medical waste and an open biohazard container were left outside of a city of Detroit building in Eastern Market this weekend, even as thousands of people shuffled through the area to shop, peruse and dine.

What’s more, Motor City Muckraker alerted the city to the waste on Friday evening, yet the acrid pile of debris remained untouched outside of the Fire Department Apparatus Division until Saturday evening. Even then, only the open biohazard container was removed; a large bin with two types of needles, medical waste and unmarked plastic jugs was leaning against rolls of insulation Saturday night.

The waste was from EMS rigs that were being serviced.

After we alerted the city to the waste, A HAZMAT team was dispatched Friday night but found no needles, said Mayor Mike Duggan’s spokesman John Roach.

It’s unclear how a team of hazardous materials experts would miss needles on top of a waste bin or why they would leave behind the other debris, some of which blew onto the street.
