Detroit firefighters doused a fire on the fourth floor of Operation Get Down on Monday morning before any serious damage was caused at one of Detroit’s largest and most highly touted community-based organizations.
Firefighters were called to the five-story brick building at Harper near Gratiot at 6:45 a.m. and immediately called for extra manpower when flames were spotted on the fourth floor. They searched the building and found no one trapped inside.
Quick-acting firefighters doused the fire with extinguishers before the flames were able to spread.
The cause of the fire appeared to be accidental and related to a heat source that was too close to a combustible, firefighters said.
Operation Get Down provides services to people struggling with mental illness, drug addiction or joblessness.
