SUV slams into controversial farmer’s market that blocks Detroit’s border at GP Park

An SUV slammed into the back of the controversial farmer’s market that blocks the border of Grosse Pointe Park and Detroit this weekend.

The incident happened sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning and was captured on video, which shows an SUV backing into the street-blocking shed at a high rate of speed at Kercheval and Alter.

Grosse Pointe Park Police Chief David A. Hiller and City Manager Dale Krajniak, however, refused to discuss the case or say whether the culprit has been captured – continuing the lack of transparency that has incensed many GP Park residents. Hiller declined to answer any questions, and Krajniak wouldn’t return calls for comment for the past two days.

“The matter is under investigation,” Hiller said repeatedly when asked questions.

The shed was fixed over the weekend.

The damage occurred after Grosse Pointe Park officials said at a public meeting recently that they may back out of an agreement with Mayor Mike Duggan to remove the shed and open up traffic on Kercheval. At a recent public meeting, Grosse Pointe Park Mayor Palmer Heenan told residents that they would have to “wait and see what we come up with.”

When residents said they expected more transparency, Heenan snapped back: “You have taken our time, you have made your point. Enough is enough.”

He added: “You ought to be grateful you live here.”

Duggan’s spokesman John Roach said he was not aware that Grosse Pointe Park may back out of the pact and said he is investigating.
