Detroit Firehose Challenge: Charlie LeDuff gets soaked for a new local cause

Leave it to Charlie LeDuff to transform the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge into something for Detroit.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter was doused with a firehose in what he has dubbed, “The Detroit Firehose Challenge.”

He donated $1,000 to the Detroit Firemen’s Fund Association, which assists families of firefighters who were injured or killed.

“You don’t have to take a firehose in the grill; I’m going to,” LeDuff said. “You can use a garden hose. You can use a water balloon. You don’t have to do anything, but please donate to the Detroit Fireman’s Benevolent Fund.”

Before being soaked with a firehose, LeDuff said, “I pledge $1,000 to my brothers and sisters who look out for my brothers and sisters.”

While a reporter at the Detroit News and Fox 2, LeDuff passionately covered the crisis in the Fire Department, where rigs routinely break down, thousands of arsons go unsolved a year and firefighters are forced to work more for less.
