Flooding submerges dozens of cars, closes highways, impedes firefighters in Detroit

Rapidly rising water submerged dozens of cars as motorists and passengers fled for higher ground in metro Detroit on Monday evening.

The flooding was so rampant that Detroit firefighters and police were sometimes unable to reach emergencies.

The flooding came as heavy rain pounded the area for several hours beginning this afternoon, overwhelming the city’s ailing underground sewage system that carries storm water.

Water rising from manholes submerged cars on I-75 at 7 Mile, where firefighters rescued stranded motorists and passengers. Dozens of cars were under water and discarded.

Flooding also closed underpasses at Livernois, Clark and Junction.

In Highland Park, Woodward Avenue was closed after flooding swallowed several cars.

In homes across metro Detroit, thousands of basements were flooded.
