New allegations against ex-Treasurer Dillon prompt calls for investigation

Disgraced former state Treasurer Andy Dillon rarely performed his duties while collecting about $40,000 to teach his successor the ropes for three months after he officially resigned, state lawmakers alleged today. 

Sen. Democratic leader Gretchen Whitmer and House Democratic leader Tim Greimel called for an independent investigation after new Treasurer Kevin Clinton revealed that he and Dillon scarcely communicated.

They also want to know why Gov. Snyder never intervened or demanded an accounting of Dillon’s time.

“We not only need an independent investigation to look into those issues, but the public needs to be assured that scarce taxpayer resources are not being used for other questionable purposes within this administration,” Whitmer said, also questioning steep pay raises inside the treasury department.

In the week before Dillon’s contract expired, we reported that he was on a Caribbean cruise.

“Not only did we find out in January that ex-treasurer Dillon was still getting a $174,000 taxpayer-funded salary, we later found that there was no accounting of his hours,” Greimel said. “Worse than getting paid not to work is that he may have been paid by taxpayers to take a Caribbean vacation.”

Dillon resigned on Halloween after we revealed alcohol problems and racially charged text messages sent from his cell phone.

Dillon oversaw the appointment of emergency managers in numerous Michigan cities and schools but was distracted by excessive drinking and a messy divorce, we reported last year.

Dillon also was accused of domestic violence last year but charges were never filed because of a lack of evidence.
