Jan. 27, 1997: Morris W. Hood is first black chair of Michigan House Appropriations Committee

On this day in 1997, veteran state lawmaker Morris W. Hood, Jr. is tapped to chair the powerful Michigan House of Representatives Appropriations Committee by Speaker Curtis Hertel.

The appointment is historic: Hood, a 62-year-old Democrat who has served in the chamber since 1971, is the first African-American to hold the post in state history.

The committee leads the way in directing billions of dollars in state spending, including public school education, road maintenance, human services and corrections.
