A man wearing full body armor and armed with a high-powered rifle opened fire into the back of a barber shop where 20 to 30 people were gambling Wednesday evening, killing three and wounding six in one of the bloodiest shootings in the city’s recent history, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said this morning.
“This is urban terrorism,” Craig said during a press conference, offering new details about the mass shooting. “There was an ongoing feud between the individual and the gambling party.”
Police arrested a “person of interest,” and he’s being held in the Oakland County Jail on unrelated charges.
The gunman opened fire at 5:45 p.m. on the 5100 block of 7 Mile Road between Mound and Ryan. Some of the victims tried to flee but were trapped at the door because it opened inward.
“There was an attempted mass exodus,” Craig said.
