Sen. Ted Cruz has blocked a bipartisan bill that would provide hundreds of millions of dollars to cities like Flint to upgrade their drinking water infrastructure.

Democrats have supported the aid package, but the Republican presidential candidate has placed a hold on legislation that is critically important to helping Flint address its water crisis.

Cruz placed a “soft hold” on the bill to take a closer look at the spending, his spokeswoman Rachael Slobodien said Thursday. She said the hold may only be temporary but added there are no guarantees.

That means the bill can’t move to the floor, delivering a blow to Flint after thousands of its residents were poisoned by elevated levels of lead.

The aid package calls for $220 million to Flint and other cities to address drinking water emergencies.

The Flint water crisis began in April 2014, when state officials switched the city’s drinking water source to the Flint River, despite numerous warnings about the hazards of such a move.
