A 91-year-old man was beaten, doused with gasoline and set afire in his Detroit home in an apparent attempt to cover up a robbery early this morning.
Police said Paul Monchnik, whose body was charred when firefighters found him shortly before 3 a.m., may also have been shot in the head before the culprit stole his silver 2000 Chevy van.
Police believe they have the suspect on video buying gas to burn the victim.
“This is a horrible crime,” Police Chief James Craig said. “We are going to do everything we can do bring this person to justice.”
Firefighters were called to a burning house at 20556 Bentler near 8 Mile and Lahser and found the man’s body near the front door.
