Protesters to gather daily in downtown Detroit as unrest spreads

Protesters said they’re just getting started in Detroit.

After hundreds of people marched and staged die-ins during the Noel Night festivities in Midtown on Saturday, organizers are hoping to maintain the momentum with protests scheduled at Campus Martius at 12:03 p.m. today, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Campus Martius was the scene of a die-in last week that evolved into a march north on Woodward to Wayne State University and back. Police have shown a lot of restraint and even escorted protesters who were marching on the streets.

While Detroit played a major role in the civil rights movement in the 1960s, demonstrations have shrunk to small gatherings of the same few dozen people over the past two decades. But that is changing after a grand jury decided last week not to indict the white New York City cop who killed an unarmed Eric Garner, a black man, using an illegal chokehold.

The protests are attracting a racially diverse crowd of all ages and economic backgrounds.
