Detroit firefighters responding to a vacant house fire this morning quickly found out they were up against yet another brazen arsonist.

A firefighter was injured while battling one of three abandoned house fires that broke out within eight minutes and four blocks of each other at 7 a.m. on the west side.

The firefighter from Engine Co. 54 strained his back pulling debris from one of the fire scenes and was taken to Sinai Grace Hospital.

At 7 a.m., firefighters were called to a vacant house fire at Riverdale and Keeler where they spotted two additional blazes. Two fires were on the 15000 block of Riverdale and one on the 15000 block of W. Parkway, four blocks east.

The area, at the northeast corner of Telegraph and Fenkell, is riddled with abandoned, burned-out homes. But like most neighborhoods in Detroit, some blocks are lined with tidy, occupied houses.

No one else was injured in the fires.

Detroit’s arson squad is overwhelmed and has only able to investigate between a third and a fifth of all suspicious fires.
