Toxic fire breaks out at oil company complex in Detroit this morning

Fire Department truck logoAn enormous fire broke out this morning inside a large 2-story facility that holds a 400-gallon tank of diesel near the Rouge River in southwest Detroit.

Firefighters declared a level 2 hazmat situation at 500 S. Dix, where a large commercial building was engulfed in flames at 4:20 a.m.

It wasn’t immediately clear which oil company was responsible for the blaze but Marathon assisted at the scene.

Firefighters initially tried to attack the fire but backed off after the diesel tank ruptured. At 5:30 a.m., firefighters began extinguishing the fire with foam.

By 7 a.m., the fire was contained and largely extinguished.

Emergency officials were encouraging people to stay away from the area.
