By the time firefighters arrived this morning, a three-story apartment building on Detroit’s west side was engulfed, and people were jumping from their windows.
The inferno ripped through the sprawling Jason Manor apartment building near Schoolcraft and Outer Drive.
Firefighters immediately helped rescue dozens of people after arriving shortly before 6:30 a.m. Within minutes, the fire was upgraded to a four-alarm blaze, which means nearly 20 fire companies were called to assist.
It’s unclear how many people were injured or killed in the fire. Authorities at the scene said up to 10 people are still missing.
The cause of the fire also is under investigation.
“I have people who are still jumping, people with no clothes,” a fire official radioed in to dispatch more than 10 minutes after arriving, requesting warming buses for the displaced, shivering residents.
Several ambulances were seen transporting people to the hospital.
