Authorities began the arduous task of combing through the charred debris of an enormous apartment fire in Detroit in search of bodies and evidence this evening.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the fire was related to a ruckus party at Jason Manor Apartments on the 21000 block of Jason near I-96 and Outer Drive. Police were called to the large apartment building shortly after 3 a.m. When they arrived, a 19-year-old woman said she had been sexually assaulted by four men.

Police said they couldn’t find the suspects and left the scene at 5:12 a.m. About 45 minutes later, the apartment building was ablaze, forcing residents to leap from their second- and third-floor windows.

At least three people were injured.

Several residents were still missing as the evening grew dark.

The 4-alarm blaze could have been worse. Firefighters rescued about 25 people, including children, as the fire engulfed the building within five minutes, authorities said.

Police released details on one of the rape suspects. He’s 5-foot-4, light-skinned, clean-shaven and has dreadlocks.
