What appeared to be a large fire on the roof of the Guardian Building was actually an optical allusion, a county official told us today.
A video of the alleged fire swept across Facebook on Monday, causing concern that the building was damaged Sunday night. Dispatch records showed fighters were never called to the art deco skyscraper.
County Executive Robert Ficano’s spokeswoman told us she saw the video and confirmed there was no fire.
“Human eyes see what their minds want or expect to see,” the spokeswoman, June West, said. “I checked with the building management and they confirmed that there was no fire.”
So what was the orange glow emanating from the roof?
West said no one knows for sure, but it could have been snow blowing around and picking up the orange glow from lights atop the historic building or other nearby buildings.

Plus, West said, the Guardian’s smoke and fire detectors would have quickly alerted authorities to a fire.

“If it really had been a fire, there definitely would have been a 911 call and all kinds of DFD activity – especially with an occupied building the size of the Guardian and all of the alarm and fire detection/suppression systems a building this size is required to have.”
The video has since been taken down from Facebook.
