A Dearborn Heights homeowner said he accidentally shot 19-year-old Renisha McBride in the face after fearing she was robbing him, police said today.
The case has stirred controversy because McBride, who is black, was killed while seeking help following a car accident in a predominately white neighborhood in Dearborn Heights.
At 2:30 a.m. Saturday, McBride scampered from her car to a house where she knocked for help. The homeowner, whose name has not yet been released, opened the door with a shotgun. He said the gun accidentally went off.
McBride died on the front porch.
The case is under investigation by the Dearborn Heights Police Department.
