Sheriff Napoleon ducks tough questions in mayoral race, prefers trite posts on social media

Screen Shot 2013-02-18 at 11.11.53 PMWayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon is undoubtedly a frontrunner in Detroit’s mayoral race.

Only problem is, no one really knows where he stands on a number of big, important issues. That’s because his campaign team is distancing the sheriff from the media and controlling the message through social media, such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Forget that many Detroiters don’t have access to social media.

So what do these social media posts tell us about Napoleon?

That he traded substance for buzzwords and cliches.

“We can make Detroit safe again, and improve our quality of life,” one post read on Instagram.

“Public safety must be the priority of any mayoral administration,” he tweeted.

“While Detroit is traversing some of the most troubling times in history, Detroit’s potential is more palpable than ever,” he wrote on Facebook.

But seriously. What does he think of an emergency manager or leasing Belle Isle to the state? What’s his plan to keep buses running and police on the street?

How will he balance the interests of downtown with those in the struggling neighborhoods?

Those questions have been answered by other mayoral candidates, but not Napoleon.

Why is he ducking hot-button issues? We tried asking his campaign, but no one returned our messages and calls. We even tried engaging him on Facebook and Twitter. But nothing.

At a time when Detroit is flirting with bankruptcy and unable to provide basic services, Napoleon owes residents more transparency.

Buzzwords won’t fix Detroit.
