Council President Pugh to misanthropes: Show us a plan or “shut the hell up”

Many Detroit City Council members are at wit’s end over the nearly two years of bantering, bickering and name-calling from residents who are turning up at meetings in increasing numbers to demand no votes on virtually every budget proposal.

Those in attendance are largely opposed to state intervention and other large projects, like the recent deal with an entrepreneur to transform hundreds of vacant lots into free farms. During recent meetings, speakers have equated the state and some business owners to money-grubbing slaveholders.

But those same residents aren’t offering alternative solutions to ensure the city has enough money to pay for services in a few months, Council President Charles Pugh said on the Craig Falhe Show on WDET-FM (101.9)

“Unless you have a better alternative, then shut the hell up and sit down somewhere,” Pugh vented. “Unless you want to sit down with me with your detailed plans, then shut up. Seriously.”

Pugh has not yet announced whether he’ll run for mayor.
