Council President Pugh loses temper on radio – again

Council President Charles Pugh lost his temper on the radio this morning, taunting callers and dismissing the radio host.

When one caller from Farmington Hills suggested the council has lost its power under a consent agreement with the state, Pugh repeatedly interrupted the caller on the Angelo Henderson Show on WCHB-AM 1200.

“How’s the Farmington City Council doing?” Pugh said over and over again as the caller, who is black, tried to express concerns about Pugh’s apathy toward African Americans.

Pugh interrupted every caller, ignoring Henderson’s attempt to let the caller speak.

Pugh also lambasted another caller not going to council meetings.

“Keith has never been to a city council meeting,” Pugh said of the caller, not explaining the relevance.

Henderson pointed out there’s no way for the council president to know everyone who attends a council meeting.

The first-term council president, who has been under fire for outbursts at council meetings and on social media sites and radio shows, took a caller to task for suggesting Pugh approved a consent agreement that diluted the council’s authority.

People keep saying we gave away our powers,” Pugh said. “We didn’t give away any of our powers.”

That’s untrue. In fact, the consent agreement allows the mayor and an appointed board to usurp council authority.

Henderson, an award-winning journalist, told Pugh he was wrong.

Pugh replied, “You act like we don’t exist.”

Pugh’s temper tantrum immediately spurred criticism from Detroiters on the radio show’s Facebook page.

“I am so offended by the way Charles Pugh talks on the radio,” Laveda Glover posted on the page today. “I am so sorry I voted for him. I just don’t understand why Angelo allows him to do that. When Pugh is on Angelo’s show, from now on I will change the station.”

Added Gwendolyn Cotton, “He won’t let callers say what they have to say without talking all over them and trying to interrupt.”

We will post audio from the radio show later this afternoon.
